Depending on the size and viewing distance of the banner, it is posible to go as low as 80dpi for a photo image. For more detailed viewing photos that are close up eg posters, its probably best ro keep it above 150dpi or more.

 

As a general rule 100-150 DPI maximum at full scale or no less than 10%.
